Dubai: The Middle East retail sector is facing some serious setbacks. The EMKE Group is fully committed to further strengthening its position as a leading brand of Lulu Hypermarket and its largest Gulf-based operator, the supermarket chain. The group’s latest hypermarket, HE, is located in Al Barsha, Dubai. UAE Cabinet Minister Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi has increased the total number of stores in the Gulf to 58. According to the latest reports released by Planet Retail Ltd., a UK-based retail analyst, EMKE Group is ranked 12th in the list of Top 30 Grocery Retailers in Africa and the Middle East. The UAE-based EMKE Group is the only local player to make the list, becoming the number one retailer in the Middle East. (Others are European retailers with stores in the Middle East other than Africa.) The same report predicts that by 2010 the EMKE Group will be in 10th place with sales of US $ 2.4 billion, an increase of 125% from $ 1.07 billion. 2006.
